Zero Non-Conformances on the Next Audit – John Ewing’s Instructor Perspective

The eQuaLearn instructors are the focus of a new feature. John Ewing shares his experiences teaching Introduction to Pyrometry, Nadcap Audit Preparation, Internal Auditing and Root Cause Corrective Action.

Many instructors, including yourself, are auditors. How do the roles of instructor and auditor differ?

The scenario and relationships during training are completely different to auditing. As an auditor, the focus is on verifying systems, procedures, operations and practices. As an instructor, on the other hand, I let participants know that my goal for the course is for them to have zero non-conformances on the next audit. I want them to know that I�m there to help with the interpretation of criteria associated with the Nadcap checklist and to give details on the Task Group interpretation of the audit. eQuaLearn classes provide an opportunity to have a detailed and structured look at the Nadcap audit and checklists.

Who participates in the classes that you conduct?

In most cases, I see a real cross-section. The last class was at a supplier location and there were quality managers, quality engineers, people who perform testing and process operators. We also see technicians and furnace operators.

Can you describe the atmosphere in the classes?

I try to make all my presentations interactive. I aim to get people talking in the first hour so that really good discussion can follow on.  In the on-site classes especially, attendees can talk about specific issues and practices in their company, or even incorrect procedures and how they do things. We can then go into specific details about their operations and go deeper.

How has eQuaLearn changed over the years?

eQuaLearn started as a smaller operation 7 or 8 years ago  and has continued to build up year on year. Recently, there has been an increased requirement for private presentations, in-house. This increased use of training programmes may be the result of a bigger focus; as the economy recovers companies are able to reassess their developing budgets.
